Girl Scouts is for every girl, every where!

Thank you for your interest in Girl Scouts!

Girls Scouts is the world's pre-eminent organization dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, Girl Scouts cultivate their full individual potential. The qualities they develop in Girl Scouting - leadership, values, social conscience, and conviction about their own self-worth - serve them all their lives.

Girls and Adults may join anytime of year. Below are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) regarding the Girl Scout organization and how to register as a member.

How do I register my girl with Girl Scouts?

Click here to fill out a Girl Interest Indicator! Someone will get back to you between 5-7 business days. This is not a registration form but simply a method for us to collect some important information regarding your family's interests, needs, and a telephone number to contact you. Please be sure to include your girl's age and grade, and how you might like to help.

Girl Scouting is a volunteer-led organization. We need you! We need adult volunteers on every scale. No matter how small a time commitment one is able to make we have Volunteer Opportunities that fit any schedule. Please see Volunteer Opportunities for more information. Register with that special girl in your life, enjoy unique experiences, and treasure for a lifetime the wonderful memories that you and your girl will create together.

Who may become a member?

Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17 or grades K-12 and adults (both women and men) ages 18 on up, who pay the $10 annual membership dues (Financial Assistance is available), make the Girl Scout Promise, and accept the Girl Scout Law.

How are Girl Scout troops organized?
In Girl Scouting, girls are organized in troops/groups with girls of a similar age. We offer programming for girls ages 5 through 17 and volunteer opportunities for adults (both women and men) ages 18 on up. The Girl Scout program follows these membership standards:
Daisy Girl Scout ages 5-6 or Kindergarten-1
Brownie Girl Scout ages 6-8 or grades 1-3
Junior Girl Scout ages 8-11 or grades 3-6
Studio 2B (Girl Scout ages 11-17 or grades 6-12)
Very often Girl Scout troop/groups are also organized by similar geographics. Your girl would likely be placed with girls of a similar age, grade-level, and community neighborhood. In cases in which we do not have enough adult volunteers, girls will be placed on a waiting list. Please consider becoming a Girl Scout volunteer and complete a Volunteer Application formAdobe PDF today!

How much does Girl Scouting cost?
There is an annual $10 membership fee to register as a girl or an adult member of the Girl Scout organization. Financial assistance is available to anyone who marks the appropriate box on the membership registration form. The entire $10 membership fee is forwarded to GSUSA, our National Headquarters located in New York City. Your $10 membership fee covers the member accident insurance policy and your subscription to the Girl Scout Leader magazine.
An additional payment of troop/group dues, ranging from $15 to $35 and which are decided by parents/guardians and troop leaders, are used to help pay for activities throughout the year. The Girl Scout Cookie Program Activity also helps with expenses. Uniforms are optional and program books are purchased every 3 years. Financial assistance is available.

How will Girl Scouting benefit my girl?

A leading Market Research company in Minneapolis recently surveyed GSCGM Girl Scouts. This is what we learned:
  • Girl Scouts in the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis feel comfortable with themselves, with their peers, and with adults.
  • Girl Scouts in the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis have definite plans about their education and careers -- 99% plan to go to college.
  • Girl Scouts in the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis are twice as likely than girls in general to participate in volunteer activities in their communities.
  • Girl Scouting has direct, proven benefits for girls.
My girl has a disability. What measures are taken to provide an inclusive experience for her?
Girls with disabilities have been a part of Girl Scouting from the beginning. Our founder, Juliette Gordon Low, had a hearing-impairment.
Girls with disabilities join in troop/group activities alongside girls without disabilities. In Girl Scouting, we give every girl the opportunity to participate in the same program. With support from GSCGM and GSUSA, leaders adapt activities, meeting places, and field trips for girls with disabilities, and involve parents and the other girls in the process as needed. Funds are available to assist with professional fees such as Sign Language Interpreters and/or Personal Aides.

Are adult volunteers needed in Girl Scouts?

Yes! In fact, we couldn't do this with out you! Girl Scouts is a volunteer-led organization. 99% of our adult members are volunteers. Both women and men are encouraged to volunteer. No matter if you have a little time, or a lot of time, there is a volunteer opportunity suitable for any kind of schedule. Volunteer positions include but are not limited to: troop leader, special event coordinator, curriculum writer, sports coach, Board member, troop organizer, trainer, clerical and administrative support in data entry, assembly of mailings, collating/assembling packets, telephone work, materials inventory, etc. Please see our Volunteer Opportunities for additional information.

If I volunteer, how much time would be involved?
Most volunteer positions have an average time commitment of fewer than 12 hours per month. We have many volunteer opportunities that average only one hour to a few hours per month. See below for the FAQ, "What if I don't have a lot of time to volunteer?"

What if I don't have a lot of time to volunteer?
Though troop leaders are the number one position we need to fill, we have volunteer opportunities that do not require a lot of time and are short-term.

Consider writing a troop newsletter, shopping for supplies, making telephone calls, assisting others with a weekend program event, driving girls to Girl Scout activities, screening volunteer applications, teaching a troop/group a specific skill, assembling mailers, etc. You may have a unique idea of your own. The possibilities are endless! Please see our Volunteer Application formAdobe PDF and consider how you might like to help.

Girl Scout Law
I will do my best:
   to be honest and fair,
   friendly and helpful,
   considerate and caring,
   courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to:
   respect myself and others,
   respect authority,
   use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
