PART ONE - STANDARDS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis encourages troops and groups to create their own web sites. The following standards and recommendations were developed in an effort to maintain the integrity of the Girl Scout program, name, and standards in troop/group web sites.

The GSCGM web site will only link to troop/group sites which comply with these standards. (For information about the peer review process, click here).

STANDARDS

Policies and Procedures
Just as any other Girl Scout activity, the development and maintenance of the web site should be guided by Safety-Wise, the Blue Book of Basic Documents, and the Leader Resource Guide.

Safety
The safety of Girl Scouts is the first responsibility of our organization.

  • Include, or link to, GSUSA’s Online Safety Pledge on your web site http://www.girlscouts.org/internet_safety_pledge.asp .
  • Use first names only for girls.
  • Use Troop # or age level, Council name, and/or City as identifiers.
  • Do NOT list phone numbers, street addresses, school or work names for girls or adults.
  • Use group photos whenever possible. Label the photos with a group identifier, such as "Troop 0000" or "Junior Girl Scouts of Brooklyn Center."
  • Publish only the date, time, and city when listing meeting locations and times. (You may want to list an E-mail address to write to for further information.)
Examples:
  • We will meet at Linda’s at 7 p.m. on the 4th Monday of each month.
  • Leader’s meeting, September 25, 7 p.m., Brooklyn Center.
  • Troop meeting on Saturday, 9 a.m., at our regular location.

Identification as Troop/Group Site
  • Clearly identify your site, listing your troop number or numbers, service unit name etc.
  • Identify your troop or group as belonging to the Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis, but make it clear that your site is not the official GSCGM site.
  • Do not copy text, graphics or photos from the GSCGM, or GSUSA sites unless they have been specifically designated for copying.

Content
  • Content should follow the standards set in the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Content should be appropriate for the targeted audience.
  • Content should be 100% Girl Scout related.

Girl Scout Logo and Tagline
  • Follow the guidelines for using the Girl Scout Logo and tagline. Click here to review the guidelines.

Links
  • Links to other sites should be appropriate for your target audience.
  • If you link to non-Girl Scout sites, post a disclaimer stating that you are not responsible for the contents, advertisements, or additional links on that site.
Example:
  • The sites we link to may have content that changes often, as well as a broad range of links and advertisements. We cannot be responsible for, nor do we endorse any content, links, or advertisers provided on these web sites.

Advertising
  • If you are using a free Internet Service Provider (ISP) with advertisements, post a disclaimer releasing you from accountability for the banner advertising.
Example:
  • Troop 0000 is not responsible for any third party links to advertising. We do not recommend nor endorse any products or services advertised.

Cookie Sales
GSUSA revised the policy on Internet Cookie Sales on December 22, 1999, after the printed version of this Guide was distributed to Service Unit Managers. The new policy is:

Girl Scout Cookie Sale Notice
Girl Scouts of the USA has a new position to help us ensure the safety of every girl we serve, to protect the tax-exempt status of Girl Scout Cookie Sales (and our other council-sponsored product sales), and to ensure that all Girl Scout cookie orders from customers are in our councils' jurisdiction. Beginning with January 2000 product sales, both girl and adult members cannot engage in any type of sale of Girl Scout Cookies, nuts, calendars, magazines, candy, etc., on the Internet. Girls may use e-mail to alert their friends and relatives about our local Girl Scout Cookie Sale.

Please share this new policy with girls and volunteers in your Girl Scout troops and groups, and please do not use the Internet to sell cookies. Girls may use e-mail to alert friends and family about the sale.
