RECOMMENDATIONS

The following is a list of the Web Advisory Committee’s strong recommendations. They are not included in the standards because it would be impractical for the peer reviewers to verify that the recommendations are being followed.

Safety
  • Examine all identifiers – photos, site address, email addresses, names mentioned in the text – to ensure that the privacy and safety of each individual is maintained.
  • Eliminate evidence of any last names. Check the site address, e-mail addresses listed, meeting information, and photo labels.
  • Keep identifying information to a minimum.
  • Talk with Girl Scouts about online advertising. Many advertisers will ask for your e-mail address or e-mail addresses of friends. Girl Scouts should not give out any personal information over the Internet.
Content
  • Get written permission before using photos or stories.
  • Avoid duplication of information that can be found on the GSCGM or GSUSA web sites.
  • Use official Girl Scout terminology, always capitalizing Girl Scouts, Brownie Girl Scouts, Junior Girl Scouts, etc. Follow the style used in GSUSA publications.
Links
  • Link to the GSCGM home page at www.girlscoutsmpls.org.
  • Link to other sites that contain only information that is safe and suitable for children and appropriate for Girl Scouts.
  • Consider using a review process similar to the Council’s for links to other sites.
Maintenance
  • Update your site regularly. Dates of events, product sales and activities should not be more than three months old.
  • E-mail addresses and links should be checked frequently to be sure they are still active.
  • E-mail should be answered promptly.
Equal Access
Girl Scouts include all types of people. Some may have Internet access; some may not. Web sites should compliment, not replace, other information sources. Answer the following question before designing your web site, "If I did not have a computer at home, how would I know about meetings and activities?"
