Frequently Asked Questions
How can I get involved? There are many ways to volunteer. Serve as a leader for a troop or group, assist at special events, serve on a committee, coach a sports team, teach a special skill to a group, facilitate a club, assist with administrative work…. One of the best things about volunteering with the Girl Scouts is that you have choices- how, when, and where you want to volunteer. Who do we serve? We serve almost 20,000 girls ages 5-17 in Minneapolis and eight western metro counties. Our program reaches one out of every eight girls in the area- only the Minneapolis Public Schools serves more girls than we do in the metro area. Any girl from any where can join; we provide financial aid for those who request it. Where are we located? Our office is in Brooklyn Center. We also have three camps near Fridley, Elk River, and Buffalo. However, girls meet anywhere and everywhere. Troops and groups meet in schools, parks, places of worship, recreation centers, apartment complexes, transitional housing shelters, and homes. Our council jurisdiction covers Hennepin, Isanti, Anoka, Sherburne, Wright, Carver, Scott, and Dakota counties. Do I need any special skills? Yes- you need to be a good role model for girls. Our volunteers help girls grow strong in a safe environment. There are many skills that you can use to aid this mission- serve as a mentor, show girls a skill, help on the administrative end, sit on a planning committee, etc. Your positive attitude will help girls grow strong. We provide you with training on other skills needed. What makes our volunteer opportunities unique? We are a charter council of the world's pre-eminent organization dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. We have top notch training that will serve you as a volunteer and give you skills to carry with you in other areas of your life. Most important, Girl Scouts gives you the opportunity to serve as a positive role model for girls. Who can volunteer? The Girl Scout Council of Greater Minneapolis is an inclusive organization. People of all sexes, genders, races, classes, religions, sexual orientations, ethnicities, and abilities can volunteer. Men can also volunteer. Since we are dedicated to providing girls with positive female role models, men are paired with women as co-leaders. If you are over the age of 18, and can be a positive role model for girls, and are looking for a flexible schedule, Girl Scouts is a great place for you to volunteer. How long does the application process take? Once we receive your application, we will check your references. Afterwards we will meet to decide on the best fit for you. Our training is available as a self study so you can decide how fast you want to go through the training. After any required training, your volunteer role begins. What kind of references do I need? We are dedicated to insuring that girls grow strong in safe environments. All prospective volunteers must supply three references. They do not all need to be professional references. What will my schedule be like as a volunteer? Your schedule will look how ever you want it to look. If you chose to be a leader, you will decide along with the parents/guardians of the girls in the group or troop when would be the best time to meet. Most groups or troops meet every week or two for 1-2 hours. Other positions offer schedules that are extremely flexible and require shorter time commitments. Whether once a month or once a year, the time and you share is up to you. Why am I asked to become a member when I volunteer? We are a membership organization. A membership fee of $10 is required from all girls and volunteers. Financial assistance is available to anyone upon request. All of the membership fee is sent to Girl Scouts of the United States of America in New York, our national headquarters. Your $10 membership fee covers the member accident insurance policy and your subscription to the Girl Scout Leader magazine. Becoming a member means you are dedicated to helping girls grow strong. |
