  Outdoor Training
PURPOSE
At outdoor, overnight & trip training, adults learn how to teach and prepare girls for group living in a setting different from the troop/group meeting. Plan to attend training far enough in advance so that you can work with the girls for at least six meetings to help them plan for a simple overnight. They will need a longer period of time to plan for more complicated camping or trips.

Girls need to:
  • Plan their program
  • Plan menus and/or supplies
  • Shop for food and/or supplies
  • Learn to prepare food safely indoors or out
  • Practice safety skills
Adults need to:
  • Plan for emergency preparedness and risk management
  • Assess girl readiness
OUTDOOR, OVERNIGHT & TRIP TRAINING PRE-REQUISITES
All participants must be GSUSA registered adults. In most cases, prior completion of Orientation, Girl Scout Basics and current age-level training is required because this training is progressive, i.e. building on information covered in leader training. For example, Safety-Wise is introduced in leader training, and outdoor trainers teach safety concepts related to outdoor activities. Participants do not need to be the primary leaders of the troop/group but do need to have completed the pre-requisites.

CHOOSING A TRAINING SESSION
The progression of sessions adult volunteers need to attend depends on the troop's program plans, including where girls will sleep and how they will prepare food. Check the introduction to the individual outdoor, overnight & trip training sessions for detailed explanations. Click here on Outdoor Training Path to get an overview of outdoor training requirements.

Check out our handy brochure listing all of the outdoor training sessions.

ALTERNATIVE OUTDOOR CERTIFICATION
Alternative outdoor certification is available for those who qualify. Applicants fill out a form documenting their experience. At a minimum, applicants need to attend Overnight Training A. Family camping experience alone does not meet the requirements. Call the outdoor training manager at (763)971-4056 for more information. The form can be sent by email attachment, and is five pages long. Click on Forms to find the form. Alternative certification is seldom given for (D) Extended Trip Training.

OTHER TRAINING NEEDS FOR OVERNIGHTS, CAMPING & TRIPS
Troops/groups need a first aider for any kind of an overnight. Check Safety-Wise for CPR and First Aid, equipment, and training requirements, and for specific information about girl/adult ratios. The Council Resource Guide contains a trip approval form to fill out and give to your service unit manager to obtain approval for your overnight trip, or it can be found on our website under Forms.

DIETARY, HEALTH OR MOBILITY NEEDS
If you have special requests for food or other needs at outdoor training, contact the outdoor training manager at (763)971-4056 as soon as possible.

Meals at outdoor training are planned to use a variety of outdoor food preparation methods and routinely include a vegetarian choice. Beverages are provided, but this does not include soft drinks.

Some outdoor training sites are not completely accessible for a wheelchair.
